WHO AM I:

Sports ruled my life. I grew up playing every sport I could get my hands on from cheerleading, to lacrosse, football, and hockey. I loved it all. I continued on to play fastball and hockey at a competitive level throughout my early life. I completed my Bachelors Degree in Health and Physical Education while playing for the Mount Royal University Women’s Hockey Team.

Sports made me who I am today. They developed my underdog mentality, which birthed my grit, work ethic, and love for fitness. I had to work hard to make the teams that my friends easily walked onto. I was a short, round, quirky kid who did not do well in school. I wasn’t really a coaches (or teachers) dream, but my extreme work ethic was noticed and I was able to squeak my way by.

I spent hours in the gym chasing my athletic goals, getting strong, and dreaming of playing hockey for the rest of my life. I started fitness training at the age of 14, and fell in love with fitness. The gym was the one place that made sense. The hard work I put in was rewarded with strength and athletic gains. Show up, work hard, get results.

Between the ages of 16-23 my love for fitness transitioned into an obsessive eating and workout disorder. I faced the demons and grew through this life-changing chapter which ultimately is the reason Jolt Fitness exists today. You can read more details about my Starvation to Strength story here.

I created Jolt Fitness because our methods, coaches and community was what I needed when I started my fitness journey. Jolt is here, so that no one has to suffer through fitness without expert guidance and caring leadership. Our methods create an environment where fitness is more than just six pack abs and bicep curls. We bridge the gap between health care and fitness. At Jolt Fitness, we build resilient bodies and create high quality lives. We believe that when you leave the gym you should feel better than when you walked in. We’re part of the active health care solution. Every time you step through our doors is an opportunity to improve your health, physically and mentally. Our methods are rooted in science based education, but also the real life experiences of working with thousands of individuals. We’re changing the narrative and industry of health and fitness.

COACH: RACHELLE KEYS

WHO AM I:
I recognized pretty early on in my life the importance of keeping your body moving and I did just that through sport. Ringette and fastball have been part of my life ever since I can remember. As I became more competitive in ringette, I started to realize that if I wanted to have an impact on the team I needed to show up, on and off the ice, and that is when I started going to the gym. I slowly began to gain more interest in how the body moves as I started to see a difference in how I played and how my body benefitted from the work I had put in.

I studied Kinesiology at Laurier and played for the Goldenhawks ringette team. Juggling school work and sport, I utilized exercise as my outlet, as it helped me both physically and mentally through a very busy schedule. As I learned more about the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise, from classes such as biomechanics and anatomy to sport psychology,  I wanted to spread my knowledge with others and help them feel happier and healthier. I was able to start sharing my passion of fitness by helping create and leading workouts for Laurier athletes and this led me to getting my CanFit Pro personal trainer certification.

My goal as a trainer is to help people recognize all the benefits that exercise has to offer and that no matter what background you come from (a retired athlete, a weekend warrior, someone who has never been to a gym or someone who has a disability), exercise is for everyone! Finding something that works for your body and learning how to listen to your body is crucial to create a healthy lifestyle.

FITNESS BELIEFS

  • Exercise is not always about going hard at the gym; it can be as simple as going for a walk

  • Everyone comes from different exercise backgrounds; don’t compare yourself to others

  • Adding movement to your everyday life, not matter how much or little, can lead to a healthier lifestyle

  • Registered Kinesiologist (R.Kin)

  • Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology, Minor Psychology (Fitness Assessment & Exercise Perscripition, Functional Human Anatomy, Human and Exercise Physiology, Athletic Injuries, Teaching and Coaching Physical Activity, and more)

Trainer: CATHERINE DODDS

WHO AM I:

My passion for movement and exercise began at a young age when I began to play sports. Very quickly, sports consumed my entire life. I dedicated my childhood and teenage years to playing competitive hockey, field hockey, and rugby. Eventually, my focus narrowed to hockey, leading me to play for McKendree University in Illinois. My commitment to sport has carried into my adult years as I have been fortunate enough to continue playing competitive hockey and broomball.

Exercise and lifting in a gym setting has been incorporated in my life alongside sport since I was very young. However, once I was finished playing hockey in university, I very quickly learned that I wouldn’t have sport-specific coaches programming workouts for me for the rest of my life. Out of necessity to continue leading an active lifestyle, I began learning how to become an athlete in life, and not just in the hockey arena. I rediscovered how fun, stress reducing, and resilience building going to the gym can be. From this point forward, I knew I wanted to help others experience these same benefits that exercise had brought into my life.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the gym is feeling empowered to do challenging things with your body. I strive to help individuals discover their own strength and capabilities, fostering a sense of independence and confidence, inside and outside of the gym. My goal as a trainer is to help you set realistic goals, celebrate progress, and empower you to take control of your health and fitness while building healthy habits that last a lifetime.

FITNESS BELIEFS:

  • Fitness empowers you to become the best version of yourself, enhancing physical strength, mental clarity, and overall well-being.

  • Fitness demonstrates our capacity to conquer challenges and overcome obstacles.

  • With hardwork, dedication and effort, you can achieve difficult goals and surpass your own expectations.

  • Fitness is a gift to your body, not a form of punishment; it's a journey of self-care and empowerment that nourishes both body and mind.

Trainer: COURTNEY HOFFMAN

WHO AM I:

As someone who grew up as a full of energy kid, who was a little rough around the edges, physical activity became the best way to burn off some of that energy that we all knew drove my parents nuts at times. Ringette and Baseball were my sports of choice. Starting Baseball in Kindergarten and carrying it on all the way through to Grade 12 taught me the importance of being physically active and how doing so is important for your mental and physical health.

I found the gym in grade 12 and like all teenage girls who often struggle with body image, I joined to try and get skinny. After years of fad diets and non effective exercises I finally realized that what I was doing was not working. I learned to shift my mind set to doing what felt good for my body and used the gym as an outlet for my mental health. From then on it's been a whole other ball game. After switching focus from eating as little as possible and failing miserably over and over again, to fueling my body with the proper foods it needs, the mental clarity came along with it.

Adding to the equation, my passion for cooking and baking stemmed all the way back to being a kid in moms kitchen, watching her cook with such passion for food. And when most kids were watching cartoons mid day, you could find me watching the cooking channel telling myself “I want to do what they do when I grow up”. Carrying my passion for food into a career as a Chef may seem difficult at times but it has helped me understand and appreciate the food we fuel our bodies with on a whole other level.

My career and passion for physical activity has brought me to where I am today. There are only positive experiences from marrying my two passions, cooking and fitness.

FITNESS BELIEFS:

  • Health over aesthetics; train your body and mind for a better quality of life, not just for the body image that society has labeled as “toned” and “fit”

  • Living a healthy, happy life is all about balance. Balance in the gym, your diet and your social life. One can not operate optimally without the other.

  • Take care of your body and mind the best way you know how. Its the only one you have so treat it with love and kindness.

  • Eat the sweet treat and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

EDUCATION:

  • Culinary Management Diploma & Artisanal Culinary Arts Diploma - Fanshawe College

  • Red Seal Certified Chef - Ontario College of Trades

TRAINER: BRIANA Johns

WHO AM I:

I grew up always playing sports and staying active. During my time in college I signed up to a gym with tons of exercise machines and intimidating people. I really knew nothing about the machines and would turn to Bodyweight Pinterest workouts. I felt like an embarrassed imposter.

Since moving to Exeter my passion for strength training only grew stronger. I knew I never wanted to go back to the “30 Minute Booty Burner” workouts and intimidating places.

With a lot of education, perseverance and hours spent learning from highly qualified fitness professionals I landed at Jolt Fitness.

I believe that exercise shouldn’t be a punishment, it should build you up. I love community, coaching and supporting people in a way that best suits their lifestyle. Exercise and movement are for life.

The gym doesn’t have to be a scary and intimidating place. We are all human inside Jolt Fitness. I believe in celebrating all achievements, big or small!

FITNESS BELIEFS:

  • Movement is crucial to a healthy life

  • Don’t punish your body doing something you hate

  • Be yourself

WHO AM I:

My ongoing involvement in sport and movement in addition to my longtime passion for the human body has lead me to where I am today. I grew up playing hockey, field hockey, and soccer, and have been fortunate enough to continue playing these sports recreationally in my adult years. I enjoy challenging my body, hustling, and working as a team toward a common goal. In my adolescent years I began to lean into my interest that is the human body and pursued a BSc. in Biomedical Sciences at UoGuelph. During my four years at Guelph I remained involved in recreational sport while I absorbed as much as I could about human anatomy, nutrition, and physiology, which constantly left me in awe of how incredibly intelligent and gifted the human body and its processes are.

It wasn’t until after my undergraduate studies that I began my relationship with the gym. I developed a deep appreciation and love for the individual physical challenge it presented, similar but different from the usual team environment I was used to, and began to learn, grow, and gain. I used my time at the gym to not only better myself physically, but also used it as a practice for self discipline and developing a healthy relationship with myself and my body.  With consistency and discipline I began to experience and be encouraged by the many downstream effects that exercise brings to your quality of life, such as improved energy levels and quality of sleep, better mental health, making healthier food choices, heightened confidence, and the list goes on. At the same time, I started my studies in Osteopathic Manual Therapy at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy where I learned even more about human biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology.

I originally entered this field with the drive to work in a traditional healthcare setting, but eventually shifted my perspective on what healthcare truly meant to me. Half way through the program I decided to switch directions as I desired to be apart of proactive healthcare that embodied all pillars of health, all of which I believe can be found on the gym floor.

My goal, as a trainer, is to facilitate your individual relationship with your body and health. I want to empower you by helping you reach and evolve your goals through education, effort, and the development of sustainable strategies.

FITNESS BELIEFS

  • Your body is built and engineered to move and keep you healthy - use nutrition and exercise to tap into the body’s innate ways of maintaining health and longevity

  • Consistency and discipline will take you places motivation never could

  • Exercise and resistance training is the most lucrative investment for short-term and long-term health

Trainer: PIERA VALENTI

WHO AM I:

As a child I wasn’t formally introduced to sports. My parents immigrated to Canada in their 30s and they weren’t familiar with the sport culture in or outside of schools so it simply wasn’t on their radar. When I entered high school I shied away from the sports offered at my school because I felt my schoolmates had already developed excellent skill sets and that I wouldn’t find my place in those sports. I felt like a fish out of water. However I was very drawn to physical activity and started working out at home in front of the TV (Hello, 20 Minute Workout!) At the age of 16 I started going to big box gyms and I consider being a “gym rat” my first “sport”. Has fitness ever changed over the years! In addition to strength training, I entered the world of endurance sports in my thirties. I started running and participated in many races from the 5K distance (mostly) all the way through to the marathon distance. I suffered repeated injuries and in 2009 took a year off running. I started cycling to replace running for that year and absolutely fell in love with road riding. At the age of 43 I learned to swim, which I definitely did not love, however since I was already a runner and a cyclist I thought I would try the challenge of  triathlon racing. I joined a triathlon club and participated in amateur races for the next 5 years. I stopped running in 2017 due to continued injury. My love for cycling grew and I added a gravel bike, mountain bike, and fat bike to my fleet. Every minute I spend on any of my bikes is pure joy and I use them to travel, bike pack, and pursue vacation opportunities. More recently I started to practice yoga and I love it.  I truly feel I have the perfect mix of strength training (the foundation that allows for everything else!), endurance sport, and yoga which combines the body and soul.

FITNESS BELIEFS:

  • Physical wellness is a multi-pronged discipline. I believe it requires strength training, cardiovascular training, and movement/mobility/balance training to round out  an approach that will result in a good quality day-to-day life while optimizing how long that life will be.

  • Moving your body is a privilege and should be protected.

  • Fitness should be considered as important as any other part of your life and therefore should be scheduled.

  • Physical fitness is part of a package with mental fitness and emotional fitness.

  • It’s okay to try hard things and fail.
